Fribourg

Fribourg is a charming city that makes a convenient stop en route between Montreux and Bern. The Sarine River forms a loop around the town, adding to its romantic appeal. The newer part of Fribourg (which isn't that "new" since it has many outstanding historic buildings) sits high on a bluff overlooking the river. The ancient part of the city, which is exceptionally attractive with its colorful squares and cobbled streets, sits below the bluff, hugging the banks of the Sarine. The splendid 13th-century Saint Nicolas Cathedral, famous for its life-sized statues dominate the town.Within walking distance is the impressive 16th-century Hotel de Ville (town hall) adorned with an impressive clock tower, the Musee d'Art et Histoire, the 18th-century Basilique of Notre-Dame and the splendid 13th-century Franciscan church, Église des Cordeliers.

The upper part of Fribourg is interesting, but my favorite section is the lower part of the city which is even older. You can reach it by walking down a steep road to the river and crossing over the Pont de Saint Jean, and then you are in the ancient part of the city with its maze of quaint streets, historic houses, pretty squares, and renaissance fountains. You can cross back over the river by means of the Pont de Berne, a delightful old covered bridge.
