Hondarribia

Hondarribia—on some maps named Fuenterrabía—is a picturesque coastal town in northern Spain almost on the border of France. Our preference always gravitates towards towns that are unspoiled and Hondarribia certainly fits the bill. Although close to traffic-congested San Sebastián, Hondarribia maintains the quiet ambiance of a small medieval town. It is located on a gentle hill overlooking a sparkling blue bay lined with modern holiday condominiums and dotted with colorful yachts. Yet within the walled town itself, time stops still. Starting at the lower gates, the streets lead up the hill, terminating in a large plaza with one side opening to a belvedere overlooking the bay. Another side of the plaza is faced by one of Spain’s most special paradors, Parador de Hondarribia, while brilliantly colored houses with wooden balconies line the other two.
