Pacific Northwest - Oregon
Port Orford
Small, friendly, quirky, Port Orford feel a lot like Big Sur 20 years ago. It offers the best of Oregon’s spectacular southern coast, from awe-inspiring seascapes to mountain hiking trails and winding rivers. It has a very active artistic community, with seven art galleries owned and operated by working artists, including some genuinely world-class talents. Plus charming gift shops and a series of restaurants where you can enjoy creative cuisine, and fresh local seafood and produce. You can enjoy a diverse collection of historical and naturally beautiful sites and attractions, and all sorts of options for recreational activities, such as ocean, lake and river fishing, boating and kayaking, surfing and perfect windsailing conditions. Established in 1851, it is the oldest platted townsite on the Oregon coast and showcases the historic Hughes House, an authentically restored Victorian mansion from the late 1800s. The port of Port Orford is the only natural, open-water port for 600 miles and only one of six "dolly" ports in the world where working fishing boats are lifted into and out of the water every day. And just a few miles north of town is the Cape Blanco Lighthouse, the oldest and most westerly lighthouse in Oregon where it’s possible for you to be the last people in the 48 states to see the sun set! But the best part about Port Orford is that you can enjoy its natural beauty and unhurried atmosphere without the crush of traffic or tourists that crowd so many vacation spots. You can get away from it all while you’re getting away. It’s very cool.
