Balestrand

There are many excursions available in Balestrand.  Apart from the obvious outings such as beautiful walks or bicycle rides, there are also excursions that are sold at the tourist office located in a building near the pier.  One tour you should not miss is by ferry up a gorgeous little fjord to see the JOSTEDALS GLACIER.  The ferry leaves only steps from where the hydrofoil arrived from Bergen.  The ferry pulls away from the dock and makes its way up a narrow fjord to the tiny town of FJAERLAND where a bust meets the boat at the pier and takes the passengers to the Jostedals glacier where there is a time allowed to explore on foot and also to have a snack at the small café.  Not only is it interesting to see the glacier, but the boat ride on the splendid Fjaerlandfjord is glorious – worth the outing even if there were no majestic as its prize.

A very special excursion is to visit the 13^th-century HOPPERSTAD STAVE CHURCH.  The first leg of the tour is by a ferry.  The ferry crosses the fjord where the bus is waiting for the short ride to the Hopperstad stave church, which is not only an outstanding example of a stave church, but is also picturesquely situated in a lovely meadow, surrounded in spring by wildflowers.
