Asciano

As my husband and I drove southeast of Siena, we became hungry and decided to stop at the next village. Asciano, fortunately, was the next village! We might have been there during siesta time because very few shops were open. We passed a couple of open bars before finding one with elderly men outside playing cards--a sign to us that we had found our place for lunch. I don't know the name of the bar, but the owner was very kind as I spoke my few words of Italian. His English was better than my Italian. He made us delicious panini from proscuitto and cheese. We took our sandwiches and wine outside and watched the gentlemen play cards. We also enjoyed gelato for our dessert. I have overused the word "charming" to describe this area to friends, but "charming" does the job!
