Kilanerin Village dates from around the late 1600s and was initially a small crossroads settlement south of the larger Limbrick Village with its Castle and Church. After the Cromwellian settlement and redistrubution of lands in the 1650’s the Church at Limerick would have fallen into disuse and a less conspicous chapel more in keeping with Penal times was erected in Kilanerin. This chapel was burned on June 29th 1798. It was eventually replaced by the present church designed by Pugin 1865 Parish records in Kilanerin go back to the mid 1700’s. The surrounding area is steeped in history. Available are many history books with details of the evictions in Croghan 1887 to the Gold found on Croghan Mountain 1795.
