Revel

Revel Market is a real must see, even if you aren't a massive foodie! It takes place every Saturday morning - The stalls start packing away at midday but this is when some of the best bargains are to be had, so worth hanging around for. Sit in one of the cafes that line the square and sip on a Pastis or a cup of coffee and watch the world go by. Under the main covered halle (hall) there are more you will find smaller local producers selling a multitude of items, from live ducks, rabbits and chickens to pet kittens and puppies. There are a great deal of organic (or bio) producers who sell speciality cheeses, meats and vegetables. Outside the halle there are flowers, plants, cheese, fish, dried sausage, patisserie, and of course wonderful fruits and vegetables. Wander along some of the side streets and you will find so lovely little shops selling everything from beautiful lingerie and perfumes to one shop that only seems to sell clothes airers. There are several shops that have brocante or knick knacks that make great presents or souvenirs and are very reasonably priced. Also along these roads are further market stalls selling fabrics, hats, leather goods and any manner of odd things you would never know you needed. This is also where you will find the lovely woven shopping baskets. Why not buy one and stock up with produce and then head up to Lac St Ferreol (just 10 minutes from the centre of Revel)Grab a picnic blanket and sit and relax looking up to the mountains, the pine forest and the lovely clear lake, which has recently been classed as a UNESCO heritage site. From the lake you could take a scenic tour through Saissac and Montolieu to Carcassonne, or head back into the centre of Revel and visit some of the 45 antique and reproduction furniture shops, where you can see the local artisans at work.
