Cahors

Although it appears to be a large city, Cahors, in reality, is an enchanting, medieval city set on the bend of the River Lot. I would definitely recommend that you take time to venture into the city. Embraced by the banks of the river the city is famous for its architectural richness: the dramatic Pont Valentré bridge built in the 14th century, the Arc de Diane, a remnant of a vast Gallo-Roman thermal establishment, the Saint Etienne Cathedral from the 11th and 12th centuries, the tower of Pope John XXII, and the Saint Barthelemy Church. Not to be missed at the heart of the city is the old core with its houses, mansions, gates, lanes and squares. There are lots of restaurants, sidewalk cafes and interesting shops. With lots of character and a quiet pace, this is a city to explore on foot, or take advantage of the bike paths that follow the banks of the river Lot. Cahors serves as an excellent focal point for exploring the region and sampling its wonderful wines.
