Capital/Prefecture of the Gers department, in the Midi-Pyrenees region, in the heart of the great South-West between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, only 1 hr away from Toulouse and the Pyrenees. Auch is known for its Renaissance Cathédrale Sainte-Marie, La Tour d'Armagnac - a 14th century prison, as well as for d'Artagnan - who was based on Charles de Batz-Castelmore, Comte d'Artagnan a real life person who inspiered Alexandre Dumas to his famous novel "The 3 Musketeers". The impressive cathedral of St-Marie with its magnificent organ holds two of the regions finest art works: the Arnaud de Moles stained glass windows and the 113 carved oak choir stalls. Auch is a vibrant centre of commerce and has numerous good cafes and restaurants.
