Saumur
A Karen Brown Recommendation
Saumur lies on the edge of the River Loire. Rising from the town are the walls of Saumur castle, a 14th-century fortification built atop a sheer cliff. A trip to the castle makes a visit and exploration of the town of Saumur worthwhile.

Saumur is a great town to use as a base for doing day trips to nearby chateaus. Best little hotel in town is Hotel St. Pierre. It is right across the street from the Cathedral and easy walking distance from Saumur castle. Lots of wine caves to visit nearby. French riding school Cadre Noir is a must see if you are at all interested in riding and dressage. Lots of good restaurants. Le Grand Bleu has excellent seafood and the best mussels and frits.

Saumur is a beautiful tourist town which straddles the Loire River and over which stands the great Chateau of Saumur. The town is home to the famous ’Cadre Noir’, France’s equivalent of the ’Spanish Riding School’ in Vienna.
