Tours is located at the junction of the Cher and Loire rivers, the center of the Loire Valley, which makes it a good base for exploring the region. It has the added advantage of being on the main rail route to Paris—less than an hour away by express train. The heart of the old town with its timbered buildings and cobbled streets is a delight to explore, many of the streets restricted to pedestrian traffic.
