Guéthary

In the coastal hills is Guéthary, the coast’s smallest village, nestled in the hills above the beautiful expanse of blue ocean. Guéthary derives its name from the Latin word “to observe” as its setting provided a wonderful vantage point from which to spot whales. Its numerous villas, many of them lovely red-and-green timbered and shuttered houses, are a testament to its days as a very popular and wealthy seaside community. Don’t leave without visiting its picturesque port and driving by the charming cliff-top railway station. Like Bidart, Guéthary boasts some lovely neighboring beaches (quite popular with surfers) and interesting shops.
