Amador City and Drytown, the first two towns you encounter after leaving Sutter Creek as you head towards Placerville on Hwy 49, have an old-world charm and are worth exploring. However, following thereafter is a string of commercial towns that are of little interest to the tourist although the intervening countryside is still most attractive. Follow Hwy 49 as it weaves through the commercial sprawl of Placerville.
