An alternative drive south is along Route 11, which parallels I-81, passing through many historical towns with lots of buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. All the commercial activity in each of the towns is on this route, including a large number of antique shops. Among the towns and historical sites worth visiting is Lexington, where you find Washington and Lee University, the Virginia Military Institute, the George C. Marshall Museum, and the home of Stonewall Jackson.
