Toledo
A Karen Brown Recommendation
| Recenter Map To This Location |
Toledo is justifiably popular: hardly any tourist visits Madrid without taking a side trip to Toledo. Most come for the day; but to enjoy the town to its fullest, try to spend the night so that you can settle in after the busloads of tourists have left. The site itself is worth a journey—Toledo huddles on a plateau that rises steeply above the River Tagus, which forms a steep ravine looping around the city. Within its mighty walls, Toledo is a virtual museum. Don’t miss the spectacular Gothic cathedral with paintings by El Greco, Van Dyck, and Goya; or the Iglesia de Santo Tomé where El Greco’s best work, the Burial of Count Orgaz, is displayed. Also, see the Alcázar, a huge 13th-century fortress converted by Charles V into a royal palace.
