Cuenca
| Recenter Map To This Location |
Cuenca is only about a two-hour drive southeast of Madrid, yet is not as well-known as many of Spain’s towns that, in our estimation, are not nearly as spectacular. If time allows, definitely include Cuenca—and plan to stay for several days because there is so much to see in the area: the dramatic castle at Belmonte, the Romanesque church in Arcas, the fanciful rock formations in La Ciudad Encantada (The Enchanted City), and the Roman amphitheater at Segóbriga. But Cuenca, itself, is the highlight. The town is perched high on the top of a rock formation that drops straight down to the River Huécar. Clinging impossibly to the cliffs are the casas colgadas (hanging houses) whose wooden balconies stretch out over open air. Narrow streets and steep stairways make walking an adventure. Spanning the deep gorge carved by the river, a narrow, walking bridge connects the old town with the cathedral (now housing a parador) on the other side of the chasm.
