Marsala, a city well known throughout the world for its excellent wine. Ironically, it was not an Italian, but an Englishman, named John Woodhouse, who experimented by lacing the native wine with an extra bit of alcohol. Based on Woodhouse’s formula, Marsala quickly became one of the staples of the British Navy and a special favorite of Lord Nelson.
