Detour off the main road into the famous village of Oberammergau where many of the homes have ornate murals and seemingly all the shops sell very expensive carvings. Every ten years the Passion Spiel (Passion Play), a religious play, is performed here. It was a spectacular performance for the millennium and will be staged next in 2010. All the residents in town are involved in the production and performance of this play, which celebrates the end of the misery and death associated with the Black Plague. In between plays it seems that everyone in the village carves. While it’s a bustling spot during the day, in the evening it’s very serene. The church has a very attractive interior.
