Castello di Montegualandro

When the Marti family from Rome came across the abandoned castle of Montegualandro 20 years ago, it was love at first sight—only pure passion could have driven them to tackle such an overwhelming project as the entire restoration of the property following original plans. A winding dirt road (1.5 kilometers) leads up to the gates of the walled 9th-century castle. As you enter into the courtyard, the main building and family residence lies to the left and immediately to the right is a cluster of stone dwellings, originally farmers’ quarters, with small tower, stable, pottery kiln, dove house, and private chapel. There are four rustic guest apartments, cleverly incorporating all original architectural features. All different, each has a living area with fireplace, very basic kitchen facilities, and bathroom, and is furnished with country-style antiques. A walk up in the turreted walls gives a glimpse of the spectacular view out over olive groves to the lake. An internet point has been set up in the newly restored library. The Martis take special interest in guests’ needs, providing a breakfast basket upon arrival, and can also suggest easy day trips. Cortona is just 10 kilometers away.
