Casa Spello

My husband and I lived in Umbria for a year and a half and returned to visit friends and family as well as see more regions of Italy we had missed when we lived there. My husband and I lived in Umbria for a year and a half and returned to visit friends and family as well as see more regions of Italy we had missed when we lived there. We booked our stay for a week and a half along with a friend who was traveling with us. Spello has always been one of our most favorite hill towns and we always took visitors to Spello and we wanted to stay there on this visit.

We contacted the owner and she was gracious,so helpful, and we knew this would be the perfect place to stay.When we arrived and were met by Nadia, the guest services coordinator, We all had huge smiles when we opened the door to Casa Spello - it is beautiful, comfortable, elegant, and has the most incredible views over the Val’Umbra ever! We had a full kitchen with a large refrigerator by Italian standards, a dishwasher ( not working at the time of our stay), lovely dishes,platters, glasses, pots and pans, along with every utensil you could ever need if you wanted to eat in the apartment.

The decor is very inviting and everything you need to enjoy your stay is there including a CD Player. The upstairs bedroom is beautiful with more of that incredible view, comfortable bed, and one of the biggest bathrooms, with two sinks, and lots of storage. There is a washing machine and lots of sun outside in the garden for drying along with racks and clotheslines.

The evenings when we were home were spent outside in the private garden with a bottle of wine watching the sunsets and the mornings were beautiful from our upstairs bedroom and bathroom. When you open the shutters each morning, it takes your breath away each time. The kitchen has a large table with a window perfect for seeing the morning and you can have coffee outside in the garden or walk a few short minutes away and have your cappuccino, sitting outside and watching the world walk by.

Parking is typically in the main piazza, but totally walkable. Shopping is right in Spello, with many wonderful small shops selling fresh fruits/vegetables/ staples nearby. Morning coffee, gelato, and wonderful restaurants are in Spello along with cash machines, the post office, and many local artisans shops all within walking distance. No matter how late in the evening it is, is a safe stroll back to the apartment.

We loved our stay at Casa Spello and will come back to stay here again. We love Umbria and return as often as we can and this is one of our most favorite places to be.Each time we would leave for the day and come back and see the towers of Spello, we knew we were home! Our four-day stay at Casa Spello was absolutely amazing. From the relaxing garden to the absolutely charming rooms, this vacation home - actually, more like a private estate - was spectacular. Everything was perfect on our arrival, complete with a welcome basket of local snacks and wine. The entire estate is spotless AND charming, with recently updated bathrooms and spacious, modern kitchens. We stayed there with a large group and had access to all of the apartments so we saw all of the various apartments, which can be rented out individually or together so you have access to the whole house like we did. Every unit has its own personality but they are all very well-appointed and beautifully furnished. Casa Spello has the old-world charm of a medieval stone building, but all the modern amenities you’re looking for if like me, you are used to only four- and five-star hotels and get nervous when booking things in Europe sight unseen. There are amazing (and accurate) photos on their website, www.italybackroads.com, so you can see Casa Spello’s various apartments and the grounds. If you are lucky enough to be there when the owners are in town, you are in for a treat - they know all of the local spots. Casa Spello is the perfect home base for a week in Umbria, centrally located and in my opinion, located in the most charming of all of the local medieval villages. There’s a great cafe just a few steps away, and several excellent restaurants and even a market within a 5 minute walk. Because Casa Spello is located on the edge of town, you have a spectacular view of the entire valley from some of the rooms and from the garden. We loved every moment - my favorite memory was just relaxing in the garden for hours eating local cheese and veggies and drinking Sagrantino wine from a winery in nearby Montefalco...ahhh. Highly recommended -- Casa Spello is in Spello, which is a a great base to explore Umbria as it is only 5-10 minutes from Assisi and definitely the most charming of the medieval villages in the area. We only wish we stayed a full week so we will definitely be back!
