We were looking for a small charming, rustic inn from which to explore Umbria. Antica Fattoria del Colle did not disappoint. We were looking for a small charming, rustic inn from which to explore Umbria. Antica Fattoria del Colle did not disappoint. Antica Fattoria del Colle, aka to us as Anna’s Place, is decorated with antiques in a tasteful fashion which compliments the rustic charm of the venue and offers pastoral views of the Umbrian country side.

We highly recommend taking the half pension (breakfast and dinner). Dinner is a culinary experience in which Anna serves 6 to 8 dishes featuring local Umbrian specialties. She is an exceptional chef who composes interesting and artfully choreographed menus. Examples that we experienced were farro (resurging parent of all grains which has an exceptional texture), stuffed zucchini flowers, pasta with fresh black truffles, roasted duck and home made prosciutto. Dinner is accompanied by propitious quantities of local white & red wine and mineral water. Desert is served with espresso and chilled limoncello. Anna is very respectful of dietary preferences and effortlessly prepares versions of the dishes to suit these needs - my wife does not eat meat, other guests did not eat anchovies or cucumbers. This is no problem for Anna who cheerily accommodates all requests. Anna is happy to accommodate vegetarians and has over 100 vegetarian recipes.

We were looking to immerse ourselves in the local culture and not have an American experience transported to Italy. Dinner is served family style with all guests seated at one long table. During our stay of the 6 couples, all were Italian tourists except us. If you know some Italian, it is a great way to improve. If not, no problem, as Anna speaks very good English and as she says...’I love to speak English.’ Also the other guests speak varying amounts of English. Besides, after a view glasses of wine, any language barriers disappear. Dinner easily lasts 3 hours after which a stroll through the beautiful property or a fun game of bacchi ball bring a nice close to an enjoyable day and evening.

Anna\’s Place is very close to the autostrada and is an easy jumping off point for exploring Umbria (northern and eastern parts). Finding the place can be a little tricky so we recommend locating the inn during daylight hours for the first time. Afterwards, it is quite easy to find. Some input based on our experience is the following. Whether you approach north of Deruta or from the south, you will need to cross from the west to east side of the autostrada at exactly the same crossover point. There is a conservatory which has a surrounding fence just as you cross over. Turn left and follow the road which passes along the fence. At the end of the fence is a small road and hanging on the fence is a sign which says Antica Fattoria del Colle. If there are cars parked along the fence, belonging to visitors of the conservatory, the sign can be hidden. Once you find this route follow the road (there are no turn-offs) and it leads to the inn. After this you can come and go with confidence about finding the inn.

If you seek an experience similar to that which we were seeking, Antica Fattoria del Colle is highly recommended. For us, we will definitely return on our next visit to Umbria. Tell Anna hello for us if you visit.
