Casa Sola is just that—an ancient villa standing alone atop a hill on a gorgeous 300-acre estate of vines and olive trees in the heart of Chianti where the gracious Gambaro family produces prestigious Chianti Classico Riserva, Supertuscan-Montarsiccio, and extra-virgin olive oil of the highest quality. Guest apartments are just down the lane at Montarsiccio a traditional farmhouse sitting on knoll in the vineyards and at Ticciaia a rustic stone farmhouse set amongst the olive groves. The décor of the two houses is very different: Montarsiccio is all about Italian country while Ticciaia is chic and contemporary. We loved staying at Ticciaia in Lavanda 1, a beautiful 2 bedroom, 2 bath apartment with a grassy terrace overlooking the valley. Typical of several of the estates apartments it connects with Lavanda 2 the adjacent 1 bedroom apartment. At Montarsiccio I particularly admired Verde, a spacious 2 bedroom, 1 bath apartment with a large sitting room and delightful large country kitchen. This connects to Giallo a 2 bedroom, 1 bath apartment. In Montarsiccio’s garden, Il Capanno, a tiny converted barn is a perfect retreat for honeymooners. Beside Casa Sola an inviting pool overlooks the valley. Wine-cellar visits with wine tasting are scheduled once a week for guests and can be organized at other times for interested parties. The staff speak excellent English, provide maps and advice on local restaurants, supermarkets, and enough sightseeing suggestions to keep you busy for a month. Cooking lessons can be arranged in your apartment. Walking trails are signpost round the estate.
