Villa Il Colle

One of the most attractive features of Florence is that its surrounding countryside hugs the city limits, giving the possibility of staying in the tranquil foothills of Chianti. In the nearby village of Antella warm hosts Azelio and Luisa have completely restored their part of an enormous estate divided into three 14th-century villas. The downstairs area includes a large living/dining room, main kitchen, and separate kitchenette for guests’ use during the day. The vaulted antique cantina below displays an enviable collection of reserve wines. Up a steep flight of stairs are the well-appointed guestrooms, all with superb views over countryside all the way to Brunelleschi’s cupola. The bedrooms are double-bedded, individually decorated with country antiques and one has a hydro-jet bathtub. The real treat is the large junior suite with its high wood-beamed mansard ceilings, sitting area, and canopy bed. Originally the outdoor loggia, it retains its columns and seven windows looking out to both sides of the property. A country breakfast is served either in the small breakfast room or in the garden.
