Villa Simplicitas

Agritourism and bed-and-breakfast-type accommodations are virtually nonexistent in the northern lake district, so coming across the enchanting Villa Simplicitas was a special treat. The pale-yellow country house of Milanese family Castelli, run by sister-in-law Ulla, sits isolated high up in the hills between Lakes Como and Lugano and is surrounded by thick woods. There is a wonderful old-fashioned charm to the place, enhanced by many heirloom turn-of-the-century antiques scattered about the cozy living and dining rooms. Pretty floral fabrics cover sofas and armchairs, in perfect harmony with the soft-yellow walls bordered with stenciled designs. The same warmth is spread among the ten guest bedrooms with their pinewood floors and trompe l’oeil paneled walls, antique beds, and lace doilies adorning dressers. Innovative meals prepared by local chef Maurizio are served either inside or out on the veranda with green-and-white-striped awnings and matching director’s chairs. In the evening, impeccably set tables are candlelit for a romantic dinner for two—simply heavenly.
