Il Palazzo

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Il Palazzo. Ettore and Adriana are very gracious hosts.

BUT NOTE: In a double room the bathroom was up a steep, narrow flight of stairs from the room itself, in a converted attic space. This would be impossible for anyone with any mobility problems, and difficult and perhaps a little frightening for anyone else. When making a reservation, you should take care to specify if you need a room all on one level. (The Karen Brown site should probably carry this caution directly.)

Another double room was fine. It is all on one level. As described by another reviewer, it has a small kitchenette. (The room with the stairs doesn’t.) It also has a small side room that would be suitable for one or two children.

The rooms are not air conditioned (nor is it claimed that they are). But the stone walls are at least a foot thick. We were there during an unusual autumn hot spell, and yet inside the rooms the temperature even in mid-day was pleasantly cool. I think the same would be the case even in mid-summer. (Our heat wave was equal to the temperatures normally encountered in July.)

We had dinner at Il Palazzo one night, and it was pleasant and satisfying. Adriana is a very good cook, and the ingredients -- some of which came from her garden -- were excellent. Nothing fancy; just that kind of wonderful local Italian cooking that knocks you out with the superb quality of the ingredients and careful preparation of the dishes. (I have seen some negative comments on Trip Advisor about the dining room, and the food. I consider those comments inaccurate; probably because the commenter was looking for something different than what Il Palazzo is.)

Il Palazzo’s location is very pleasant. On a smallish plateau, looking over vineyards and some chalk outcroppings to the east, and across some fields toward the Rocca fortress and the Orologio (clock tower) of Brisighella to the west. The town itself is down out of view.

Brisighella is a pleasant medieval town, in a scenic area. Not much sightseeing in the town itself. The people are warm and friendly to visitors. A restaurant I highly recommend in the town is La Casetta, especially for lunch in the delightful enclosed patio.

All in all, Il Palazzo is a nice place for a few days stopover in the country. Just be aware that rustic means just that. The prices (rooms, and meal) are attractive, but you are getting facilities matched to the pricing.

Adriana told me that there’s a saying in Italy ’Where’s there is two there is three’. We were fortunate to be able to return to Italy again this year and stay for our third time. Our trip would not have been complete without another stay at Il Palazzo and being able to see Ettore and Adriana again. They are such gracious hosts. Brisighella is a beautiful non-touristy town in a lovely, green valley and a good base for day trips into the towns of the Emelia-Romagna. I highly recommend Il Pala...

Adriana told me that there’s a saying in Italy ’Where’s there is two there is three’. We were fortunate to be able to return to Italy again this year and stay for our third time. Our trip would not have been complete without another stay at Il Palazzo and being able to see Ettore and Adriana again. They are such gracious hosts. Brisighella is a beautiful non-touristy town in a lovely, green valley and a good base for day trips into the towns of the Emelia-Romagna. I highly recommend Il Palazzo to those of you who like a casual and comfortable atmosphere with delicious home style cooking.
