Masseria Salamina

The southernmost, “heel-side” of Italy’s boot-shaped peninsula, known as Puglia, presents another facet of the country’s many-sided culture. It is a land with spectacular coastlines, villages with distinct Greek and Turkish influence, endless lines of olive groves, fields of wildflowers, and a rich history of art. (Bari’s Santa Nicola church is exquisite.) All of this plus delectable cuisine and a warm and open people await in Puglia (Apulia), as does the Masseria Salamina, a 16th-century fortified farmhouse between Bari and Brindisi covering 100 acres of land and producing primarily olive oil. The long driveway leads to the sand-colored castle with turreted tower with expansive vistas over olive groves to the sea. In the farmhouse, seven rooms, each with a separate courtyard entrance, are decorated with basic reproductions and wicker furniture. Go up one level to eight one-bedroom apartments which are available for longer stays, with simple furnishings. The owner’s 17th century quarters were recently converted to accommodate five lovely suites with handsome antique furnishings. Guests have access to large sitting room and the main terrace with a beautiful view. All meals are enjoyed in a lofty, vaulted restaurant with stone floors. Off season, small groups can arrange week stays that include cooking lessons and local excursions.
