Karen's Review Of
Le Moulin des Aravis:
Le Moulin des Aravis:
In the undiscovered valley of Champorcher, Mauro and his wife Piera took over the ancient town grain mill and have reopened its doors as a bed and breakfast. The plain exterior on the road gives no clue to the fascinating interior where enormous dining-room windows look right out over the rushing torrents of Ayasse, which cut directly through this lush valley. In the middle of this spacious room is an antique carpenter’s sawing machine, once part of the mill. Restoration work on the stone mill, just off the dining room, is being completed with the hopes of continuing the grain production activity using original methods. A loft living room with fireplace and burgundy sofas looks over the main room. Piera prepares the nightly meal for guests using traditional recipes from this mountain area. The Gontiers’ agriculture activity produces various vegetables, berries, and chestnuts. The four sweetly decorated new bedrooms are located on the same floor and all have water views (and sounds!), brand-new bathrooms, lace curtains, and carved pinewood beds. Hiking trails in the valley take you up to the many waterfalls. There is complimentary rock climbing. This is a perfect spot for nature lovers wanting to explore.

We stayed for one night and we look forward to a return trip. It’s a straightforward bed and breakfast with pleasant hosts who cook wonderful food. The scenery is beautiful and the hiking is...not for the lazy. By all means plan to eat dinner here, and work up an appetite on the trail. The locals know that it’s the best place to come for an evening meal. Wine with cassis, meats and cheeses, porcini risotto, nettle soup, chestnuts, greens from the garden, rabbit, blueberry pie and more. Mmmm. A s...
