Domaine de Gorneton

The Domaine de Gorneton, as a property, and Jacqueline and Jean Fleitou, as superb hosts, both exceeded our expectations. The Fleitous, in search of a place outside of Lyon to raise their family, found the house of their dreams—a huge estate in the countryside, surrounded by 5 hectares of parklike grounds. Built around a central courtyard, the romantic, ivy-draped, combined stone and stucco home abounds with character. The oldest part dates to 1646 and there is even a secret passageway that leads from the house down to the river. On the grounds you find a swimming pool, tennis court, refreshment kitchen, ping-pong and small billiard table, large pond, fountains, splendid gardens, forests, horses, dogs, and a cat. When the Fleitous’ five children grew up, the house was really too big for two people, so they decided to take in guests. Jean, who is retired, dons his chef’s apron and prepares delicious dinners, served family-style at one large table. When the weather is warm, guests dine outside; when it is chilly, they gather in the cozy dining room that oozes charm with its low-beamed ceiling, antique table, soft lighting, and massive fireplace.
