Le Mas de Cante-Perdrix

We were made to feel so welcome by our hosts Laraine and Sean. We had a very nice large ground floor room that overlooked the gardens. The real reason to want to come back here again and again was the food. The highlight of each day was to see what we going to have for dinner. This was the best meals that we have had in two trips to France.

It’s a snowy evening here in Michigan and as I enjoy another Peter Mayle novel I am reminded of our lovely stay last summer at Le Mas de Cante-Perdrix.

The sanctuary of being inside the boundary of wall and evergreens that protects the yard of the mas from the road was my first impression. The crunch of the gravel drive and parking area. It’s a snowy evening here in Michigan and as I enjoy another Peter Mayle novel I am reminded of our lovely stay last summer at Le Mas de Cante-Perdrix.

The sanctuary of being inside the boundary of wall and evergreens that protects the yard of the mas from the road was my first impression. The crunch of the gravel drive and parking area. Then, the pool--sparkling in the sun. Oh that pool was delightful! So fresh and such a beautiful color. Rows of lavender. Roses, pots of geraniums, butterfly bush, trumpet vine. Le Mas de Cante-Perdrix is a composition. A wonderful house and garden composition that you can step right into.

We had a room on the back of the house with window facing the side yard. Generous size, very nice bathroom. Prettily decorated. The one item I would have liked was a fan but that wasn’t the fault of the host, I just didn’t think to ask for one.

The weather totally cooperated during our time in Mazan so each day after breakfast we were off to explore. The location of the mas is very well situated. In my opinion, perfect. We had plenty of time each day to reach our destinations and enjoy them. Laraine was very helpful in discussing directions.

We ate all our meals out of doors. I couldn’t get enough of the yard, the lavender and the gravel. I loved hearing Laraine’s crunch on the gravel as she came and went with her delicacies. She is a delightful hostess and cook. It was all very good--breakfast and dinner. Every bit of it. A delightful surprise was when Laraine turned on the lights that encircle the lower branches of a massive cypress that anchors the dining area. We didn’t want to go in that evening, it was too wonderful. When we returned home from our trip I had landscapers create a gravel area under our maple. Walking over it brings back the memories of those perfect breakfasts and dinners.

Having an English speaking host was a nice respite from the difficulties of communicating with a limited French vocabulary. It wasn’t something I thought would be necessary but once we arrived we found it contributed to relaxing. Unfortunately, Sean was unable to be with us during the time of our stay but I hope we can one day return and get to meet him. Laraine made us most welcome and was grand at taking care of us.
