Maison De La Porte Fortifiee

During our travel in Gascogne, the Provence of the kings we ended up in the mid- evil village of Montequiou, nestled in the foot hills of the Pyrenees. On top of the hill of Montequiou La Maison de la Porte Fortifiee is leaning against the old opening in the wall which once surrounded the village. While knocking on the 3 meter high oak door to the Chambre D’Hotes one imagines a horse carriage blasting through the wall opening seeking safe refugee for the night. After a short knock the owners open the old door and we enter a mid evil building beautifully restored and added with touches of tasteful decorations. Stunned, we are shown the various room options and we decide on the Blue Room as my wife loves an old fashioned bathtub. The room still has the original touch with a nice fire place but offers all the modern conveniences. The common quarters are overwhelming, a reading area, a beautifully decorated dining room all in a several hundred year old style mixed with tasteful modern touches and a beautifully kept garden with a terrace overlooking the valley. The splashing water of the fountain and the birds in the trees let us forget the drive of the day and we totally relax in our lawn chairs. Carsten offers us a glass of champagne while Klaus is preparing an unforgettable 5 course meal at very reasonable prices. We were stunned and stayed for a week!
