James and Marie-José Hamel are a charming couple who take great pleasure in welcoming guests to their magnificent manor home. Originally a fortress dating from the 12th century, the château was rebuilt in 1450 and again in 1750 and has a colorful history. The Hamels are fond of recounting the story of their most famous visitor, Andy Rooney of Sixty Minutes fame. Rooney worked here as a journalist during World War II when the château was inhabited by the American Press Corps and revisited in 1984. General Bradley was also stationed nearby. James, born three months after the end of the war, was a name his parents often saw in the press. Breakfast is served in the former press room complete with brass nameplate in English still intact on the door. A lofty ceiling, dark, pine-paneled walls, and a lovely old tile floor provide intimate surroundings to begin the day or enjoy an evening aperitif. Guest bedrooms are tastefully furnished and decorated with handsome antiques and harmonious color schemes. Les Jardins is a gorgeous room looking across the moat to the expanse of back garden. The rooms are found in a separate wing of the château, thus affording guests a convenient, private entry.

Would highly recommend a stay at Chateau Vouilly. We were treated graciously and warmly by both James and his wife Marie. We also received great recommendatins for places to see and restaurants to dine at. We would recommend a stay and would like to return again in the future.

Our stay at Chateau de Vouilly began with a warm welcome from James who was a thoroughly gracious host throughout our stay.
Our room was large and comfortable with a lovely view over the ancient moat of the formal garden and orangerie beyond. Other highlights included some lovely old ’country French’ furniture throughout the chateau, much of it made by James’ father, that will appeal to woodworkers and decorators alike.
