Karen's Review Of
Château de Boucéel:
Château de Boucéel:
The Château de Boucéel, listed as a historical monument, is truly a treasure. Surrounded by a vast park, it sits proudly on the crest of a small hill, facing a lawn that rolls gently down to a small lake, complete with white swans and a little bridge. This handsome stone mansion was built in 1763, though it has roots in the 12th century. Since the very beginning it has been in the family of your charming host, Comte de Roquefeuil, who can enthrall you for hours with fascinating stories of the château’s colorful past and of the role his ancestors played in various battles. The lovely Comtesse de Roquefeuil is equally charming and they both extend a genuinely warm welcome. The impeccably maintained interior is spectacular. All of the rooms are filled with astonishing antique furniture and the walls abound with family portraits. On the ground floor is a dramatic foyer with a sweeping staircase on one side, a cozy library, a billiard room, and an elegant dining room. The bedrooms display the same refined, elegant decor and perfect taste, decorated with family antiques. One of my favorites, Oncle François, is a very large room with windows overlooking the front garden. Mont Saint Michel and the landing beaches of Normandy are nearby.

Staying in the chateau is very much like being a part of history. The chateau is very grand and our room was very beautiful. We felt as if we were being transported back in time. Our family of 4 stayed in the Marquis suite - a double bed for the adults (a tight fit) and twins for each child. (This is definitely a room for older and more mature children only - there are pieces of statuary - probably very breakable on the tables and chests and temptingly slippery polished wood floors). The in...

We have stayed in over 20 of Karen’s recommendations for accommodations in France over the past 16 years and this was one of the most spectacular. The Comte and Comtesse de Roquefeuil were gracious hosts and made us feel completely at home. We stayed in the Nelly Room, which was beautifully appointed and included a small spare bedroom. If we ever return to this region of France, we will certainly come back to the Chateau de Bouceel.

We thoroughly enjoy sharing our home and it’s history with our guests and making them discover the architectural patrimony of our country.
