La Thiaumerie

My fiance and I have just come back from a 5 night break at La Thiaumerie, a beautiful little B&B near St Lo, in the heart of La Manche, France. We planned our trip around my 50th birthday and have brought back some super memories of a very enjoyable holiday.

My fiance and I have just come back from a 5 night break at La Thiaumerie, a beautiful little B&B near St Lo, in the heart of La Manche, France. We planned our trip around my 50th birthday and have brought back some super memories of a very enjoyable holiday.

I can highly recommend La Thiaumerie - it’s perfectly located if you want to stop for a few days and explore the regions of La Manche and Basse Normandie, or as an overnight stay, if you are travelling further afield. We went across on Brittany Ferries to Cherbourg from Pool in Dorset, and it was a straightforward drive down to St Lo...a couple of hours maximum, with a pit stop on the way at St Mere Eglise!

Whilst there we visited: Villedieu les Poelles, Granville, Bayeux, Avranches, Omaha Beach, Port en Bessant, Mortain and Honfleur...all easy to reach and well worth seeing if you get the chance.

The owners, Sally and Michael Byrne, are very friendly and welcoming. They have an excellent knowledge of the area and helped us plan out our daily excursions. The accommodation is charming, set in beautiful countryside with fabulous views and a very pretty garden in which to sit out and soak up the sunshine and relax. The rooms and bathroom facilities are spotlessly clean, spacious, very comfortable and reasonably priced.

Breakfasts are delicious - fresh orange juice, a selection of croissants and fresh fruits and a choice of yoghurts - finished off with freshly brewed tea or coffee! We also ate in on a couple of evenings and thoroughly enjoyed Sally\’s cooking and swapping stories with Sally, Michael and another family from the USA, who were stopping for a few days before heading off to Paris.

The weather was sunny and warm the whole time...which is apparently quite usual for early September and we spent one evening with a picnic in the garden!

I’m so pleased we chose to stay at La Thiaumerie...and I would have no hesitation in recommending it to others.

What a wonderful place to stay in Normandy. This historic farm house is located in a very central spot where all of the “must-see” spots in Normandy are accessible in less than an hour’s drive. The site itself is isolated in a small rural area that translates to lots of peace and quiet. However, the occasional “mooing” of cows reminds you that you are in a farm community. Sally and Michael Byrne immediately become your friends with their charm and cozy home. Their three bedrooms are clean and comfortable leading to a good night’s sleep with a great continental breakfast greeting you in the morning. Sally does not cook ever night, but her evening dinners are top notch with that French flair. There are nearby restaurants when Sally takes a break. This B&B has lots of pluses including Michael’s knowledge of the D-Day campaign. His suggestions for getting the most from touring these sites, as well as others, was particularly helpful. We found that La Thiaumerie in Saint Louet sur Vire offered a peaceful location with comfortable facilities, an easy drive to favorite places and a great value. We, obviously, would recommend it highly. There are some downsides to this B&B. First, it is impossible for English-speaking Americans to pronounce the name, and second some “how to get there” guidance is needed. (Sally said she would work on the directions, but would not change the name of the B&B.)
