We stayed at Le Clos des Pierres Rouges on the first night of our hike on the Chemin de Compostelle. Our stay was wonderful. In addition to the accommodation being beautiful, Thierry was particularly helpful in ironing out a major problem that arose. We stayed at Le Clos des Pierres Rouges on the first night of our hike on the Chemin de Compostelle. Our stay was wonderful. In addition to the accommodation being beautiful, Thierry was particularly helpful in ironing out a major problem that arose. We had arranged for our luggage to be transported from inn to inn by Factage, but when we arrived at Thierry and Sylvies’ at 5:00pm, our luggage wasn’t there. There had been a regularly scheduled race at Le Puy and our service hadn’t arrived at our previous B&B early enough to pick up our bags before the town was closed for the race. We were exhausted and dirty after 13 miles on the road and couldn’t change into fresh clothes. Thierry knew that other services had already delivered their clients’ bags. He suggested I change services which I did with his help. He even telephoned me on the Chemin the next day to follow up. This was especially appreciated. Our room at his house was the prettiest of all the rooms we stayed in during our 12 day hike. The bathroom had an elegant walk-in shower and a glass ’bowl’ sink. The room was spacious enough for our two backpacks and luggage when it arrived, and we had a lovely terrace, too. Sylvie is a great cook and dinner was generous and tasty. They are both charming hosts, and I highly recommend this chambre d’hote.

Sylvie and Thierry are consummate hosts in their lovely chambre d’hotes, and we highly recommend a stay there. We were walking a piece of the St. Jacques de Compostelle in March when we happened upon their place. We had intended only to spend a night or two, but wound up staying three nights: walking the trail during the day and spending evenings by their fire, having dinner with them and another guest family, and really getting to know the countryside, with Thierry’s help. He is a wealth of information and he offered to drop us off and pick us up in the villages whenever we needed. The valley of the Allier is spectacular and Le clos des pierre rouge is right in the heart of that country. The B&B is a remodeled farmhouse, close to the main Compostelle trail for easy access, and only a day or two walk (depending on your pace and energy) from Le Puy en Velay. We could not have found a better stop along the way.
