Karen's Review Of This Property:
Standing in its own thirteen-acre estate with a slightly elevated position above the village, as befits its prior status as residence of the Lord of the Manor, Austwick Hall was originally constructed as a fortified pele tower to protect the local area from marauding Scots. The structure reportedly dates back to the late twelfth century and over the years has been modified and expanded by successive owners, ranging from wool merchants to Masters of the Mint, resulting in an interesting mélange of architectural style and features. Current owners Michael and Eric have decorated with a tastefully eclectic mix of oriental rugs, Asian collectibles, wall art, stained glass and local antiques to produce a comfortable country house atmosphere. The five guest rooms (Blue, Half Tester, Coronet, Four Poster and Mullioned) vary in size from extremely large to more than adequate. We were particularly taken with the Blue room, which reportedly hosted Sir Winston Churchill on one of his painting vacations. Its particularly large bathroom features a roll-top free-standing bathtub with views over the herb gardens. Breakfast is served in the formal dining room and five-course dinners are available with prior notice.
