Cathedral House Sketch

Karen's Review Of This Property:

Ely has a fascinating history. The town got its name when St. Dunstan found monks living with women—he didn’t approve of that sort of behavior and turned them into eels. The cathedral with its huge tower held up by eight 64-ft oak trunks is visible from miles away. A short walk from this lovely building you find Cathedral House, home to Jenny and Robin Farndale. Built in the mid-1800s, the house’s unusual design has the side facing directly onto the street while its front faces a spacious walled garden. I particularly enjoyed the Oriel Suite with its brass bed, claw-foot tub, and separate sitting room. If you are traveling with a child, opt for the family suite, which has both a single-and a double-bedded room and a bathroom. Breakfast is enjoyed round the pine farmhouse dining-room table where you can plan your day’s excursions. For dinner there are several restaurants and pubs within walking distance, the most famous and popular being the adjacent Old Fire Engine House. If you are interested in self-catering accommodation, ask about the Coach House tucked away behind Cathedral House. Ely is a perfect location for touring East Anglia—within an hour lie Cambridge, King’s Lynn, Bury St. Edmunds, Wisbech, and Newmarket.
