Ballyknocken House Sketch

Karen's Review Of This Property:

The Wicklow Mountains offer some of the finest walks in Ireland and there is no finer place to stay in the area than Ballyknocken House. Hospitality is Catherine Fulvio’s keynote, with good baking and cooking providing the backbone for fine evening meals and decadent breakfasts. The house has been completely renovated and returned it to its original 1850s style so that it has all the charm of days gone by along with 21st-century plumbing. Five bedrooms have Victorian tubs with showers. All rooms are named after local places, the pronunciation of which may prove challenging! My favorites are Knocknaphrumpha and Aghowle at the front of the house with views over the garden. Catherine has a cooking school in the adjacent renovated milking sheds and guests often book one of her hour long classes on the baking of brown bread, scones and soda bread. If you want to stay for several days consider renting the two bedroom apartment over the cookery school. The Wicklow Way, Ireland’s famous hill-walking route, is close by. If you are not up to long walks, the dogs will accompany you through the hills behind the farm—but be sure to have directions with you as they have a habit of depositing you at a neighbor’s farm!

While Catherine had been kind enough to make a golf tee time for us in Wicklow and the food was good (though odd flavored jams), we were otherwise disappointed. The staff who greeted us and attended breakfast in the morning were from the continent and spoke/understood English poorly. Because of our early tee time, we needed breakfast before 8:30. There was no budging on the timing other than to agree to set out the cold buffet of cereal earlier. At 8:15 the follwoing morning, the dining room door was locked and we were told by the kitchen staff that we needed to make arrangements the night before for early buffet. After explaining that we'd done so, they finally let us in. No one was around to provide directions to the golf course, which we fortunately managed to find based on pamphlets at the desk. The two nights we stayed were not dinner nights. After returning from golf, there was no one around (between 4-6) to recommend places to eat and no book of local menues, etc. in the living room. We ended up with an unsatisfying dinner at Ashford House down the road. The hot water cycles off during the day (heaters and showers on the same system?) so after a a cold wet day outside, I could not, even after 15 minutes, get the water hot enough to shower. While the bedrooms and sitting room have lovely antiques, the bedrooms are quite crowded and the furniture in the sitting room is uncomfortable to hang out in. Finally, if you get one of the two rooms at the front of the house, you will want to find the switch for the outdoor lights. There is a huge floodlight pointed right at the house that will shine in those two bedroom windows all night long. At 10 pm I could not find or rouse anyone (it was not an emergency) to turn it off, but managed to find the switch at the bottom of the stairs. This place has sucH potential but missed the mark on many levels.

PROPERTY RESPONSE:

We do strive to ensure that guests leave us with fond memories of their stay and so I am indeed sorry to hear now of your disappointment with certain matters and in fact I too discovered very soon after you stayed of our two staff who were simply not feeding information back to the kitchen or to me. Of course, your breakfast should have been ready for you without a problem. I assure you that this is not normal practice here and the matters have been resolved. Thank you for the feedback. All the best. Catherine

Hello: We used your guide to select Ballynknocken House in Ashford, Ireland, staying three nights last week. This was our tenth trip to Ireland and we have used your listings several times in the past. I've never sent a comment reviewing an accommodation, but our stay at Ballyknocken prompted me to add a personal endorsement.
We didn't attend for the Cookery School, although that would be another reason to return. The family and staff were so helpful and welcoming, from the time we arrived to our departure. We took advantage of the Wicklow walks map that was conveniently packaged in plastic and available along with an assortment of outerwear, boots and brollies on the front porch. The Devil's Glen national woods are very close and provide wonderful walks and vistas. Breakfasts in this B & B set a new standard for delicious and definitely Irish (all local) food. The drop scones were amazing - either with lemon or honey drizzle; the apple compote was freshly made and a perfect combination of sweet and tart tastes. And, we could enjoy the buffet knowing we'd soon be out on a long walk! I hope you'll share our thanks and recommendation with Ballyknocken House!
