Karen's Review Of This Property:
The Château du Riau, although charmingly small, happily lacks none of the accoutrements of a proper castle. A bridge spans the ancient moat and leads through a whimsical, twin-towered keep (fashioned from bricks arranged in a fanciful diamond design) into the enclosed courtyard. Facing the courtyard, the two-story manor house with steep gray-slate roof reflects a harmonious blend of styles from the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries. The Baron and Baronne Durye are descendants of the original owner, Charles Papillon, a goldsmith from Moulins, who received the property from Anne de Beaujeu, daughter of King Louis XI. Although a historical monument and at times open to the public for tours, the castle is definitely a family home, occupied by the Duryes and their three sons. Reached by an impressive circular stone staircase, the bedrooms are appointed in fine antiques, with museum-quality and museum-size beds and all look onto a tranquil forest. Victoria, a lovely room with pretty pink decor, offers the most modern comforts and has a small adjoining room set with twin beds, which would be perfect for children. Throughout the house, family portraits and memorabilia abound—one portrait is of a portly ancestor who fought in the American Revolution with Lafayette.
