Hidden away from the nearby fashionable beaches of the Emerald Coast of Sardinia is the Ca’La Somara farm where warm hosts Laura and Alberto offer alternative hospitality in nine guestrooms. The 20-acre property stretches up a rocky granite mountainside where the rare Sardinian mules bred here are seen grazing. The bougainvillea-covered one-story main house next door to the owners’ quarters has a large, beautiful dining room looking out to a walled, untamed garden and a swimming pool, rare in the area, has a view of the countryside. Rustically decorated in typical Sardinian style, an interior wooden balcony spans the length of the room with colorful hand-woven rugs, baskets, and mule saddles decorating the walls. Guest bedrooms are in a separate house (seven with private bathrooms) and are painted in bright colors with matching bedspreads. A breakfast of homemade breads and cakes is served outdoors under the portico and a superlative vegetarian dinner is available upon request. The hosts’ warm and informal hospitality puts guests immediately at ease. The location allows visitors to see two sides of Sardinia: spectacular seaside and inland villages. Many archaeological sites are in the area and activities, such as biking, sailing, diving, horseback riding, and hiking can be arranged. This is a nature lovers’ paradise.
