Vadstena Abbey was built between the mid-14th and 15th centuries under the direction of its founder,  Birgitta Birgersdottir. Birgitta was born to nobility and the mother of eight children when God appeared to her in a vision. After her religous experience she left her family and founded her own religious order, building the Valdstena Abbey. Birgitta's religious genes were obviously very dominant as one of her daughters went on to become Saint Catherine of Sweden.
