Barrio de la Judería

( Sightseeing / Historic Buildings )

A Karen Brown Recommendation
Cordoba (Andalucia)
Spain

The Jewish quarter is a complex network of little streets with a typical Andalusian flavour. You must pay it a visit and get lost in its streets. Barrio de la Judería lies directly to the northwest of Campo Santo de los Mártires. Arabs and Jews once lived in harmony in this medieval quarter. About a third of a mile of restored town wall runs beside a moat and gardens along Calle Cairuán at the ghetto's western edge. At the northern end of the wall you'll see a bronze statue of a former resident, the philosopher, Seneca, standing beside the Puerta de Almodóvar, a gate that once protected the old quarter and which is even today the principal western entrance to the Judería. In the Street of the Jews is the Synagogue, constructed in 1315. She is one of the few that in Spain have conserved their original structure, with the gallery of the women, the Arón, where the sacred rolls from the Law and their profuse decoration kept to mudéjar. The adjacent houses assume that they were attached buildings of the same one, like the Talmudic School
