Stave Churches began dotting the landscape of Norway with the introduction of Christianity in the beginning of the 12th-century. Over 1000 of these churches were built until the early 1500's. Today, fewer than 30 of these original stave churches exist and many like the Ringebu Stave Church are still used as a place of worship by the locals. The stave church at Ringebu, built in 1220, is one of the larger examples and worth a visit.
