Akershus Fortress and Castle

The Akershus castle and fortress are located on the eastern side of the Oslo harbor. King Håkon V Magnusson ordered the contruction of Akershus in 1299 to protect the city from external threats. The fortress was reconstructed several times to withstand increasing fighting power. Between 1580 and the mid-18th century, it was fortified with moats and reinforced ramparts. Throughout the centuries, the fortress has served multiple purposes ranging from the royal residence to a prison. This ten by fifteen metre model shows Oslo (formally Christiania) as it was in 1840. A multimedia program illustrates the development of the city over the period 1624 to 1840.
Prison Museum Formally constructed as a state prison in 1860, it was used for detaining resistance prisoners sentenced to death under the German occupation of Norway in the Second World War.  Visits for this museum must be arranged in advance directly with the Fortress Information Centre.
