According to local folklore, the two churches were commissioned by two sisters who were feuding and would not be caught dead seen in the same church. The two churches, Nikolaikirken(St. Nicholas Church) and the smaller Mariakirken(St. Mary Church) are built within meters of each other. It was apparently not uncommon for sister churches serving different purposes to be built at one time in Norway but these two are the only surviving example.
