The West Point Military Academy is on a spectacular site with views of and across the Hudson. West Point was established as a fort in 1778 and not until 1802 did it become a training academy for the army. A visitors’ center explains the history of West Point and offers tours of the Cadet Chapel (845-938-2638), Fort Putnam, the military museum, and various monuments, all of which are worth seeing.
