Costa Alegre, considered one of Mexico’s greatest undiscovered treasures, is becoming a favored hideaway both for celebrities and the wealthy seeking seclusion in a natural paradise. Alternatively referred to as Costa Alegre (Happy Coast) or Costa Careyes (Turtle Coast) after the many sea turtles that nest here annually, it encompasses a 240-kilometer stretch of coast that runs from Puerto Vallarta in the north to Manzanillo in the south. This entire coastal area is magical, with endless, untouched coves and secluded beaches tucked between folds of dense jungle stretching to the edge of the sea. Today the Costa Alegre is home to an eclectic array of the most unique, captivating, and exclusive places to stay, with a choice of activities including championship golf and polo. We have listed the hotels under “Costa Alegre” in the “Hotel Descriptions” section of the book with their specific town name following as many of these small towns are tucked along the coast in secluded areas that might not show up on a map. The two-lane highway 200 connecting Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo runs a bit inland, rarely giving a glimpse of the sea. The road is safe, but has no lighting and curves through mountains, so it is best to make the drive during daylight hours. Along the way, you pass through a few nondescript villages, but the hotels are secreted within vast jungles and can be reached only by narrow lanes. Some of the hotels have built their own access roads, but others have as their only access the original dirt roads. It seems as if you are in the middle of nowhere but when you arrive, what a marvelous surprise awaits! These resorts are tricky to find (and some are so isolated that the only approach is by boat) so it is vital that you have prior reservations and obtain detailed instructions to the hotel of your choice. The best maps, even though supposedly up to date, are not accurate. Also, many of the hotels do not want “drop-ins,” so have few or no signs, and once you arrive at the entrance, you find a guard and a security gate. You will be amazed at the ultimate luxury available in such a totally remote area.
