If you like to get off the beaten path, from Erice drive down to Trapani and take a hydrofoil to the Egadi Isles, all less than an hour away. Just a short distance off shore, Favignana, the largest of the three islands, was once a great center for tuna. The major cannery was owned by Ignazio Florio (the same Florio who founded the Florio Winery). Levanzo, the smallest of the islands, has a very small population due to its lack of fresh water. The island farthest from Trapani, Maréttimo, is basically a fishermen’s island.
