Carrickfergus Castle is a sturdy Norman castle overlooking the boat-filled harbor The castle was built as a stronghold in 1178 by John de Courcy after his invasion of Ulster; then taken by King John after a siege in 1210; fell to the Scots in 1316; and was captured by the French in 1760. Life-sized models and a film recreate the castle’s turbulent past. (Open all year.)
