The monastery at Glendalough was originally founded in County Wicklow by Saint Kevin during the 6th century. St. Kevin came to the area of Glendalough (Irish meaning- "The valley of the two lakes") seeking a site to lead a quiet solitary life of contemplation. It was here that St. Kevin founded his monastery which later grew to include a school, churches, other out buildings and the famous round tower which was built by the monastery's monks over 1000 years ago. The tower soars over 100 feet in the air and can be seen from a long distance. The location above the valley offers magnificent views of the landscape.
