From Ballina, you can detour north 20 kilometers to Ballycastle and drive another 8 kilometers east to the great cliffs of Downpatrick Head, where the Stone-Age settlements at Céide Fields (pronounced “kay-jeh”) are being excavated.

The West
Downpatrick Head is a stunning sea stack standing alone at the entrance to Bunatrahir Bay. There is a legend of St. Patrick slaying the last snake in Ireland at Downpatrick Head, creating the separation of the mainland and sea stack with his mighty sword. Visitors can go carefully near the edge of the mainland, which is approximately 300 feet above the Atlantic Ocean, for spectacular views.
